Elliot is a city in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa . It is located in the municipality Sakhisizwe Local Municipality in the district of Chris Hani .

Elliot has about 14,376 inhabitants (2011 census). IsiXhosa is most commonly spoken. The city is located south of Lesotho in the southern foothills of the Drakensberg . Nearby cities are Barkly East 65 kilometers northwest and Maclear approximately 80 kilometers northeast. The Elliot Formation is named after the city in lithostratigraphy .
history
Elliot was founded in 1885 and received parish status in 1911. The place was named after Sir Henry George Elliot, who was chief magistrate of the Transkei area from 1891 to 1902 .
Economy and Transport
Elliot is on the R58 , which links Elliot to Barkly East and Ngcobo , among others , and the R56 which leads to Molteno and Maclear. Elliot is on the Sterkstroom- Maclear railway line , which is used by freight. To the north of the city is the Elliot airport ( ICAO code FAET).
