Elmar Brohl (* 1935 in Duderstadt ) is a German architect and historian .

Life

Elmar Brohl studied architecture at the Technical University of Hanover . After completing his studies, he began his professional career as a technical employee in the planning office of the city of Hürth . During his time in Hürth, Hermülheim Castle was demolished , which inspired him to study its architectural history intensively. This resulted, among other things, in the book Hermülheim published in 1975 and the German Order . In 1965 he moved to the Neuwied city administration and took over the management of the planning and surveying office. From 1970 he was head of the Neuwied Development Office.

In 1973 he took over the management of the building department of the city of Marburg. One of the most formative buildings in the city is the new building for the University Hospital of Marburg, which was built during his time in office . Since 1975 he has supported research into the casemates of Marburg Castle . This was initially done purely through archaeological excavations, as the plans for the fortress construction were no longer available. It was not until 1987/89 that Brohl was able to rediscover the plans in the archives of the French Ministry of Defense . As part of the research work, which lasted until 2012, casemates in the area of the witch tower of Marburg Castle were reconstructed and made accessible to the public.

After his retirement as building director in 1997, Elmar Brohl devoted himself entirely to researching the city and building history of the city of Marburg. In doing so, he presented essential studies on Marburg Castle and the city's water supply. In the 1990s he played a key role in the rediscovery and uncovering of the foundations of the Marburg synagogue, an architectural monument of extraordinary importance. He gives numerous lectures and excursions to convey his scientific work.

He is active in the German Society for Fortress Research. From 1987 to 1994 he was its vice-president and from 1997 to 2003 its managing director. Since then he has been an assessor on the board. From 1998 to 2008 he was deputy chairman and secretary of the Marburg branch of the Association for Hessian History and Regional Studies . He is also a member of the association's scientific advisory board. In 2004 he was appointed Scientific Member of the Historical Commission for Hesse .

Honors
