Elmer Diedrich Graper (also Elmer D. Graper , ED Graper , born June 24, 1885 in Princeton , Gibson County , Indiana , USA ; † July 29, 1975 in Pittsburgh , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania , USA) was an American political scientist .

Life

Family and education

Elmer Diedrich Graper was born in the City of Princeton in the state of Indiana . He was the son of August Diedrich Graper and Alvina Graper, nee Luhring. After graduating from high school , he studied history and political science at North Central College in Naperville , Illinois , and graduated in 1911 with a Bachelor of Arts . In 1921 he received his doctorate from Columbia University to the Doctor of Philosophy .

Elmer Diedrich Graper married Ada Beatrice Leffler (1888–1964) on September 2, 1913. The daughters Marian Louise and Nancy Loanne (Mrs. Ronald Voelker) emerged from the marriage. He died in late July 1975 at the age of 90. He found his final resting place next to his wife in Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh.

Professional background

After graduating from North Central College, Elmer Diedrich Graper took on a position as Instructor of History and Government at the Bradley Polytechnic Institute in Peoria , Illinois, which he filled until 1916. From 1919 he was active as an Instructor of Government at Columbia University, in 1923 he followed a call as Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Pittsburgh , in 1924 he became Associate Professor , 1925 Professor , 1930 Head of the Department of Political Science appointed, in 1955 he retired .

He also served from 1945 to 1954 as Secretary of the University Senate, from 1934 to 1936 as Chairman of the Research Commission of the City of Pittsburgh, from 1945 to 1955 as Director of the Institute of Local Government of the University of Pittsburgh and from 1956 to 1963 as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Civil Service Commission. From 1934 to 1936 he was a member of the Allegheny County Board for Assessment and Revision of Taxes.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania Political Science Association, which he presided over from 1943 to 1946, in the American Association of University Professors and in the Academic Association Phi Beta Kappa . He was particularly prominent as the author of fundamental essays in his field.
