The Elsach is a 5 km long and right tributary of the Erms on the Swabian Alb in Baden-Württemberg .
geography
source
The sources of the Elsach are located southwest of Grabenstetten . As karst springs, they arise from the Falkensteiner Cave system . Only when there is heavy rainfall and a correspondingly high karst water level, as well as in snowy winter, is the cave portal the upper source of the Elsach today. Most of the water flows most of the year in other places that are still connected to the Falkensteiner water cave.
A part of the cave water disappears after approx. 30 m from the portal in a floor opening of the water cave, flows further underground as a cave stream and then emerges below the cave entrance. A small part of the Elsach spring water rises from the Elsachbröller opposite only when the karst water level is extremely high . Another karst spring at the hiking car park on the L 211, which was captured in a spring basin, feeds the young Elsach.
course
The Elsach then runs along the L 211 for a long time in a south-westerly direction through the Pfähler valley . In the city center of Bad Urach it finally flows into the Erms from the right and east, after taking in some comparatively long tributaries on its 5.4 km course.
Catchment area
The over 30 km² catchment area extends far to the north to near the quarry near Erkenbrechtsweiler and to the east to beyond the Hengen district and, in addition to a predominant part of the Alb plateau, includes some deep and long valley axes.
