The Elschnitztalbach is a brook in the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district .

It arises around Wittgendorf with many small springs and is about four kilometers long. The various sources, some of which are several kilometers apart, all arise at an altitude of about 560 meters above sea level. After the brook has overcome about 140 meters in altitude, it flows below Rohrbach (near Saalfeld) into the Sorbitz . In 1724/1725, around 20 loads of usable iron stone were mined daily in the “Caution” mine in the Elschnitz .
