Dafydd Elystan Elystan-Morgan, Baron Elystan-Morgan (born December 7, 1932 in Ceredigion - † July 7, 2021 ) known as Elystan Morgan , was a British politician from Wales who first belonged to Plaid Cymru and then to the Labor Party .

life and career

Dafydd Elystan-Morgan was born on December 7, 1932 in Ceredigion to Dewi and Olwen Morgan. He attended Ardwyn Grammar School in Aberystwyth .

In 1953 he graduated from the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth University with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). He became a solicitor in 1957 . From 1958 to 1968 he was a partner at Wrexham .

Elystan-Morgan died in his home on July 7, 2021 at the age of 88.

politics

Elystan-Morgan began his political career at Plaid Cymru , for which he ran in the spring of 1955 in a by-election in the constituency of Wrexham and later in May 1955 and again in the House of Commons in May 1959 . In 1964 he ran in the constituency of Merioneth . Throughout his life he was an advocate of the transfer of political powers from London to elected representations in the regions . In 1965 Elystan-Morgan joined the Labor Party and was elected to the House of Commons for the Cardiganshire constituency in Wales in the 1966 general election. He was Junior Minister as Under-Secretary in the Home Office from 1968 to 1970 . He was chairman (Chairman) of the Welsh Parliamentary Labor Party from 1971 to 1974. In the general election in February 1974 Elystan-Morgan lost his seat to the liberal Geraint Howells .

From 1970 to 1972 he was deputy opposition spokesman for home affairs and from 1972 to 1974 for Welsh affairs. In 1971, he was by the Bar Association of Gray's Inn as a barrister admitted. From 1983 to 1987 he was a recorder at the Wales & Chester Circuit , and from 1987 to 2003 Circuit Judge . From 1989 to 2003 he was Deputy High Court Judge .

From 1966 to 1974 he was Chairman (Chair) of the Welsh Local Government Association . From 1970 to 1974 he was with the Association of Welsh Local Authorities . Elystan-Morgan held various offices at Aberystwyth University . From 1990 to 1997 he was Vice-President and from 1997 to 2007 President. He lives in Ceredigion , Dyfed (as of 2003).

Elystan-Morgan was the independent chairman of a Forwarding Group Committee established by the University of Wales , the University of Wales Trinity / St Davids and the University of Swansea Metropolitan . A possible amalgamation of these institutions should be explored. He has been President of the School of Welsh Legal Studies since 1999 and Life President of Bow Street FC, Dyfed since 1980.

Membership in the House of Lords

Elystan-Morgan was named a Life Peer as Baron Elystan-Morgan, of Aberteifi in the County of Dyfed on May 27, 1981 . He gave his inaugural address in the House of Lords on June 22, 1981. From 1981 to 1987 he represented the Labor Party there . He later became a crossbencher .

From 1983 to 1987 he was the opposition spokesman for Home Affairs and Legal Affairs . In the 1980s, he spoke up on prison conditions, disarmament talks, energy tariffs, and preventive measures against rape. In the 1990s, he did not speak in the House of Lords, and only in the 2000s were requests to speak again.

His attendance at meeting days in the period from the 2001/2002 session was initially in the low one-digit range and later in the double-digit range. From the 2007/2008 session onwards, he was present again more regularly.

Working in public

On March 6, 2007, he supported the abolition of British blasphemy laws , citing Richard Dawkin's description of God as "a petty, unjust, implacable control freak, a vengeful, bloodthirsty tyrant".

In December 2009 he was one of the highest recipients of expenses.

Honors

In 1991 Elystan-Morgan became an Honorary Fellow at Aberystwyth University .

family

In 1959 he married Alwen Roberts, the daughter of William E. Roberts. She died in 2006. They have two children together.
