Emanuele Greco

Emanuele Greco (born December 18, 1945 in Taranto ) is an Italian classical archaeologist with a research focus on the topography of ancient Italy and Greek colonization .

Greco received his doctorate in 1968 from the University of Bari with the thesis " L'acropoli di Velia " ( The Acropolis of Elea ) under Mario Napoli . He then attended the Scuola Nazionale di Archeologia at La Sapienza University from 1969 to 1971.

He took his first field archaeological steps under Mario Napoli on the excavations in Elea and in Paestum , under Dinu Adameşteanu in Metapont . It was here that he became interested in the archeology of Magna Graecia . In Greece he took part in the investigations in Itanos , Thouria and Efestia .

From 1971 to 1978 he was an assistant at the University of Salerno . From 1978 to 1993 he was a lecturer at the University of Naples L'Orientale , interrupted only in 1990/91, when he taught at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales . From 1994 he was associate professor of the archeology of Magna Graecia, from 1997 full professor of classical archeology at L'Orientale in Naples .

In 2000 he followed Antonino Di Vita in the direction of the Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene , which he headed until 2016. During this time he was at Lincoln College in Oxford in 2007 , and as visiting professor at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne in 2008 .

Memberships and honors

In 2008 he became Cavaliere dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana .
