Embrace is a British band from Leeds , Huddersfield and Bradford . The band's style can be roughly described as Britpop in a mixture of Oasis and Coldplay .

Band history

The band was founded in the mid-1990s by the brothers Danny and Richard McNamara, who then found drummer Michael Heaton and bassist Steven Firth through a newspaper advertisement. After Richard McNamara had written the song Retread , the band managed to negotiate record deals with Hut Recordings ( Virgin Group ) and DGC Records in 1996. Their debut single All You Good Good People was released in February 1997 or the Independent - record label Fierce Panda . Several successful EPs followed , two of which made it into the top ten of the UK charts, and a nomination for the Brit Award for best newcomer. In 1998 the debut album The Good Will Out was released , which debuted at number one and reached platinum status. This was followed by two more albums, Drawn from Memory (2000) and If You've Never Been (2001), which also made it into the top ten and produced a total of six top 40 hits. Although the band was already known as the "savior of Britpop" and "the new Oasis " in the late 1990s and was expanded to include keyboardist Mick Dale, they could no longer match the success of their debut album, despite a record deal with DGC Records in the US could not gain a foothold outside the UK. They also fell out with the record company and lost their record deal after releasing a best-of album in 2001.

Three years later, the comeback came with the top ten single Gravity , which was written by Coldplay singer Chris Martin . With the song he showed his friendship and gratitude towards Embrace, who were instrumental in the initial success of Coldplay, as they had included Coldplay in their stage program in the mid-nineties as a support act. The album Out of Nothing (Engl. Out of nowhere ) followed. It became their second number one and platinum album and was the only one of their albums to also make it into the charts in Germany.

After the successful comeback, the band followed up with another studio album called This New Day in the spring of 2006 , which again reached number one on the British charts. The first single was Nature's Law , with a number two placement, their biggest single hit. At the beginning of June 2006 the band released World at Your Feet, the official World Cup song for the English national football team. It came to number three on the charts.

In the following years, the band took a break in which the musicians pursued other projects. Mickey Dale founded the band Talk to Angels as a side project and Mike Heaton opened a drum school. It wasn't until 2011 that they got back together to record new material and it was another three years before the next release came with the album Embrace . The band's style had been modernized and their music showed more electronic elements. In April 2014 it reached number five on the charts.
