Preliminary round ( group 2 )

Algeria achieved a sensation with a 2-1 win in their first group game against European champions Germany. After a defeat against Austria, the second victory against Chile gave rise to legitimate hopes for the second round. However, Gijón's non-aggression pact sealed the elimination from the tournament after the preliminary round.
