Emil Brenning

Gottlieb Heinrich Georg Emil Brenning (born April 15, 1837 in Hann. Münden , † January 24, 1915 in Weener in East Frisia) was a German high school teacher, philologist and literary historian.

Life

Brenning graduated from high school and then studied theology, history, classical archeology and literary history at the University of Marburg and the University of Göttingen . He was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . In 1860 he became a teacher at the Frankenbergschen Höheren Töchterschule in Kassel . Afterwards he was tutor at the court of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Friedrich Franz II.

In 1865 Brenning was given the post of teacher at the old grammar school in Bremen . In addition, the philologist worked as a literary historian and in the academic field in Bremen in various associations, including a. in the Vorwärts association , in the artists' association in Bremen and in the Evangelical Union in Bremen. He also worked for the Weser newspaper and for the Bremer Nachrichten . In 1899 he was awarded the title of professor by the Senate.

In 1900, Brenning was co-founder of the Goethebund Bremen , together with the art hall director Gustav Pauli and pastor Albert Kalthoff , to which in 1903 already 1427 members and 17 associations belonged.

He was buried in the Riensberg cemetery in Bremen.

The Brenningstraße in Bremen, district Obervieland , was named after him.
