Max Emil Bruhn (born October 21, 1860 in Mühlenstrasse in the parish of Brunsbüttel ; † August 23, 1940 in Malente ) was a Protestant pastor and local writer.

Life

Emil Bruhn was a son of Hans Bruhn (born October 21, 1833 in Süderhastedt ; † November 26 in Kronprinzenkoog ) and his first wife Magdalena Cäcilia Friedrich (born May 19, 1839 in St. Michaelisdonn ; † February 13, 1891 in Kronprinzenkoog) . The father worked as a teacher in Mühlenstrasse, then in Kronprinzenkoog-Nord.

Bruhn initially attended his father's school and from 1875 to 1822 the Meldorfer School of Academics , which he left with the Abitur. As a piously educated person, he then studied a total of ten semesters of theology, eight of them at the University of Kiel, in the winter semester 1883/84 in Leipzig and in the summer semester 1884 in Erlangen. In May 1887 he passed the official theological examination. Theodor Kaftan ordained him in Töstrup at the end of October 1887 . At the end of October 1887 he took a position as a pastor in Sehestedt . During this time he wrote for the first time for the Christian folk newspaper "Schleswig-Holsteinischer Sonntagsbote", for which he made many contributions.

In Sehestedt, Bruhn took over the district chairmanship of the "Pastors' Association in Schleswig-Holstein", which had existed since 1892. In addition, he worked as a shop steward of the "Association for Schleswig-Holstein Church History", which was founded in 1896. In 1898 he submitted his application for the vacant pastoral position in Koldenbüttel, where it was introduced in March 1899. He stayed in the community with 100 souls until his retirement in 1928. Then he went to the Vizelinstift in Neumünster . He later moved to Malente.

Bruhn was buried in Koldenbüttel .

Works

Bruhn published increasingly since the time in Koldenbüttel. His mostly edifying texts could be read in numerous Protestant magazines and newspapers. He wrote about deserving theologians, stories and memoirs in High and Low German and tried to promote his faith. There were also local poems and the more extensive novella “Maleensknoll”. He moved the setting for this story to St. Peter. Bruhn also dealt with religious-philosophical, educational and cultural topics and was national and conservative. Together with the pastor Johannes Claussen from Tyrstrup , he published in 1902 "From the image of the Sunday messenger". This book contained forty biographies.

Bruhn made a lasting contribution to homeland and family research. He particularly tried to get the manuscripts of the historian Peter Sax . Bruhn published his works, which were scattered and difficult to access. In 1910 the book "Nordstrand" was created, the manuscript of which was dated 1637. Due to the First World War and adverse circumstances, Bruhn was unable to publish any further works by Sax. Instead, he repeatedly worked quotes from Sax into his own texts. With his preparatory work, Bruhn played a decisive role in the fact that Sax's entire oeuvre exists today in printed form.

Bruhn wrote three volumes "On the home history of Eiderstedt". The first volume, “From the Prehistory / On the History of Settlement and Dike” was from 1926. His texts on prehistory and early history and the Middle Ages of the region are now considered to be largely out of date. He did not keep a critical distance from the traditional sources. His descriptions of history were unsubstantiated hypotheses.

The main work of Bruhn's historiography was entitled "Chronicle of Koldenbüttel". It was published as the second volume in 1928 and is still an important source for the more recent history of the place. Bruhn gave a lot of genealogical information. Volume three from 1931 was entitled "The history of the farms in Koldenbüttel". As in volume two, he used Peter Sax and the parish registers of the place as a basis. Numerous errors can be found in the work. In addition, Bruhn worked extensively, for example on Anna Ovena Hoyer , Theodor Storm or local painters from North Friesland. By 1937, at least 300 published texts had been published.

Bruhn co-founded the North Frisian Association for Local Lore and Home Love from 1902 . He worked for 30 years on its tribal advisory board and then became an honorary member of the association. In addition, he was involved in the "Eiderstedter Heimats- und Geschichtsverein". From the founding in 1913 to 1928 he took over the office of secretary, 1927/28 also the deputy chair.
