Emil Johannes Kühne

Hans (Emil Johannes) Kühne (born May 30, 1910 in Schmiedeberg , Erzgebirge , † August 21, 1961 in Hamburg ) was a German calligrapher and typographer . He was a student of Rudolf Koch .

Life

Hans Kühne completed a commercial apprenticeship in an insurance bank in Braunschweig from 1925 and began training at the local arts and crafts school in 1926 . From 1928 he studied at the technical college in Offenbach with Rudolf Koch and from 1929 assisted in writing lessons with Professor Ernst Engel. In 1931 he became a freelance book and type graphic artist. He was the leader of courses at the employment office , the trade unions and gave private lessons. In 1933 he became an artistic employee of the Klingspor type foundry. In 1934 he succeeded Rudolf Koch as head of the writing class at the Offenbach School of Applied Arts. From 1934 to 1939 he gave special courses in writing to promote young talent with participants from all over Germany, and he also gave specialist lectures. In 1939 he was drafted into World War II as a soldier . From 1942 he led courses for manual labor and was a teacher for industrial therapy in hospitals. After 1945 he worked as a freelance graphic artist and commercial artist in Hamburg, and led writing courses. He also became a board member in graphic associations and advertising consultant for industrial companies, printing companies and publishing houses. In 1948 he founded the Rudolf Koch Circle. Kühne gave specialist lectures in various cities and was the editor of font templates and script fonts for the publishing houses Bärenreiter, Heintze & Blankertz and Kallmeyer. From 1958 he worked again as a teacher for writing at the master school for painters and at the advertising school in Hamburg.
