Emile Gerardus Maria Roemer (born August 24, 1962 in Boxmeer , North Brabant ) is a Dutch politician of the Socialist Partij (SP).

biography

After attending school in his hometown Boxmeer, he studied at the Pedagogical Academy in Nijmegen between 1982 and 1985 and was then a teacher at the RK Basisschool in Beuningen from 1986 to 1992 . He then worked as a teacher and temporarily training coordinator at the Jena Plan School in Boxmeer.

Roemer, who has been a member of the SP since January 1, 1980, began his political career in January 1994 when he was elected to the Boxmeer municipal council, to which he was a member until April 2002. During this time he was not only chairman of the SP parliamentary group in the local council, but also chairman of the SP of North Brabant . Between January 1980 and 2007 he was also chairman of the SP von Boxmeer and from 1997 to 2000 a member of the party executive committee of the SP.

He then became an alderman (Wethouder) for finances, basic security, education, youth, social affairs, labor market, law and information in the municipality of Boxmeer and held this office from April 2002 to November 2006.

In November 2006 he was elected as a member of the Second Chamber of the States General , in which he had also been parliamentary group leader of the SP since March 5, 2010 . As such, he was also the political leader of the Socialists and the top candidate of his party in the parliamentary elections on June 9, 2010 , September 12, 2012 , and March 15, 2017 .

On December 13, 2017, Lilian Marijnisse replaced him as group leader and political leader.

He has been provisional mayor of Heerlen since March 16, 2018 , making him the first mayor of the SP in the Netherlands.

In 2010 he published his book “Tot hier - en nu verder” (Up to here - and now on).
