Emilij Laszowski

Emilij Laszowski (born April 1, 1868 on Brlog-Grad near Kamanje , † November 28, 1949 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslav historian and archivist .

Life

Laszowski was a scion of the Polish aristocratic family Laszowski, who had to sell the house where he was born , the baroque Brlog-Grad Castle on the Kupa near Brlog Ozaljski (today part of the Kamanje community ) due to the passion of some family members . He first studied medicine in Graz , then law at the University of Zagreb , where he received his diploma in 1893. From 1891 he worked at the State Archives in Zagreb , whose director he was from 1928 to 1935. From 1907 he was also the first director of the Zagreb City Museum and the Zagreb City Library, which were founded on his initiative in 1906. In 1905 he co-founded the society "Brothers of the Croatian Dragon", of which he became a grandmaster for many years. The society put a plaque in his honor on the gate of the house where he was born.

Laszowski dedicated his life to Croatian history and is considered one of its most important researchers and keepers. He published numerous studies and organized important historical exhibitions, such as B. 1925 the cultural history exhibition of the city of Zagreb, to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the Kingdom of Croatia .

Honors

On June 18, 1999, the Croatian Post issued a 4 kn postage stamp “Emilij Laszowski (1868–1949)” with his portrait in its series “Eminent Croats” .
