Emilio Menéndez del Valle

Emilio Menéndez del Valle (born June 20, 1945 in Madrid ) is a Spanish university professor, diplomat and politician of the socialist party PSOE . He has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999 . Before that, he was the Spanish ambassador to Jordan and Italy .

Life

Menéndez del Valle studied law at Complutense University in Madrid until 1972 and international relations at Columbia University in New York from 1973 to 1975 . He then taught international relations at the Universidad Complutense until 1980 and at the Madrid branch of the University of Southern California until 1983 .

In 1983 he was appointed Spanish ambassador to Jordan ; then he was ambassador to Italy from 1987 to 1994 . From 1997 to 1999 he was the coordinator of the European Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) responsible for the Middle East .

In the European elections of 1999 he was for the Spanish socialist party PSOE in the European Parliament elected. In the European elections in 2004 and the European elections in 2009 he was able to receive the mandate. Like all PSOE MPs in the European Parliament, Menéndez del Valle is a member of the social democratic group S&D . He is also a member of the Committee on International Trade .

Awards

For his work as ambassador, Menéndez del Valle was awarded the Order of Al-Istiqlal of the Kingdom of Jordan and the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .
