Emine Nazikeda

Emine Nazikeda (born October 9, 1866 in Sukhumi , † April 4, 1941 in Cairo ) was the main wife of the last sultan of the Ottoman Empire .

She was born in Tzebelda as the daughter of Prince Hassan Marschania von Tzebelda and Princess Fatma Choredjan Aredba von Adler . Shortly before the Russo-Ottoman War in 1877 , Nazikeda was referred by her family to the Turkish court in Istanbul , where she met the then Prince Mehmed Vahdettin and married on June 8, 1885.

After Mehmed Vahdettin's accession to the throne as Sultan Mehmed VI. In 1918, Emine Nazikeda, the first of four sultan's wives, was his main wife.

During the Turkish War of Liberation , from 1919 to 1923, she supported various charitable institutions and had schools, hospitals, mosques and poor houses restored. After the sultan's exile on November 17, 1922, forced by revolutionaries and the Allies , she was interned by the newly founded Turkish parliament in Ankara together with other members of the sultan's family in the Palais of Ortaköy on the Bosporus . She was held there for two years until she too was exiled on March 10, 1924.

Emine Nazikeda lived in San Remo , Italy until her husband's death in 1926 , then in France and from 1929 in Cairo, where she died completely impoverished in 1941. She was buried in the Abbasiye Cemetery in Cairo.

Her niece was Kezziban Schahinde Marschania von Tzebelda (1895-1924), a lady in waiting at the court of Sultan Mehmed VI.
