Life

Street sign Emma-Frede-Weg with a short vita on the Ihme near the Johann-Jobst Wagener Foundation

At an advanced age, Emma Frede lived in the residential complex of the Johann-Jobst Wagener Foundation from 1983 , which had been established around 1900 to accommodate poor women. After Emma Frede initially only occasionally represented the foundation supervisor due to temporary bottlenecks in the foundation, her commitment to the benefit of all residents eventually developed into "full-time work" in the service of the foundation for over 15 years. So she took almost all phone calls for the foundation and then arranged the necessary. On her own initiative she hired craftsmen, for example, called the emergency doctor or rescue workers, locked the front doors at night and accompanied the helpers to the homes of the sick elderly. The tenants of the foundation building, 95% of whom were very old at the time, found their only reliable contact person at all times in Emma Frede.

Honors

  • The commitment of Emma Fredes was recognized by the Lower Saxony state government in 2000 with the award of the Medal of Merit for exemplary service to one's neighbor .
  • After Emma Frede's death, city councilor Heidi Ritzer-Bruns ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) applied to Sabine Eick, the district mayor of Hannover-Mitte , to posthumously name a path after Emma Frede. In the following, the district council supplemented the plan adopted in 1999 for the desired naming of streets, according to which, for reasons of gender and equality , the names of important women should be given preference in future street names in the state capital of Hanover.
  • At an estimated cost of 2,800 euros, the foot and bike path that runs in the Calenberger Neustadt on the eastern bank of the Ihme as an extension of the Peter-Fechter-Ufer to the Justus-Garten-Brücke and due to the proximity to the Johann- Jobst Wagner's Foundation at Theodor-Krüger-Straße 3 can establish a direct local connection, named Emma-Frede-Weg . In addition to the street sign, a legend board with a brief biography of Emma Frede was attached.
