Emma Sky , OBE , (born circa 1968) is a British policy advisor and Middle East expert .

Life

Emma Sky studied Oriental Studies (BA) at Somerville College of Oxford University and continued her studies at the University of Alexandria in Egypt , the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Liverpool continued. She speaks Arabic and Hebrew. After completing her studies, she worked for the British Council for ten years on projects in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the West Bank and from 2001 again as a consultant in the British Council's branch in Manchester , where she dealt with issues such as human rights in Bangladesh and the prison system in Brazil was concerned.

Sky was 35 years old when she was sent to Kirkuk in 2003 on behalf of the Foreign Office as an advisor to the coalition interim administration of Iraq . In 2005 in Jerusalem she was political advisor to US General William E. Ward , the US security coordinator for the Israel-Palestine conflict . In 2006 she was advisor to the commanding general of the International Security Assistance Force in Kabul , which was provided by Italy and then by Great Britain during this period. From 2007 to 2010 she worked in occupied Iraq for US General Ray Odierno , who was commander of the Multi-National Force - Iraq from 2008 to 2010 and who hired her as his political advisor.

Sky was summoned before the British Iraq Inquiry in 2011 . She teaches as a Senior Fellow at Yale University's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and is Director of Yale University's World Fellows Program.

Sky was awarded an MBE in 2003 and was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2008. Her book The unraveling was shortlisted for the 2015 Samuel Johnson Prize .
