En Dor or Endor or Endur ( Hebrew עֵין דּוֹר ʿEjn Dōr ) is a place in the Old Testament in northern Israel about five kilometers southeast of Mount Tabor . About two kilometers west of the ancient settlement hill (Tel Zafzafot) is a kibbutz of the same name founded in 1941 .
En Dor in the Old Testament
En Dor is mentioned three times in the Old Testament.
In the 17th chapter of the book of Joshua En Dor is mentioned as one of the cities in the area of the tribe of Manasseh . ( Jos 17.11 EU ) The Canaanite inhabitants could not be driven out when the land was taken , but they were later made compulsory to the Israelites .
In the first book of Samuel it is reported how King Saul asked a necromancer about the outcome of the battle in a war against the Philistines in En Dor ; she predicted that he would succumb, which soon came true. ( 1 Sam 28 EU )
The third mention of En Dor is in Psalm 83; here En Dor is mentioned as the place of death of King Jabin of Hazor and his captain Sisera. ( Ps 83.10–11 EU )
