The bell hat mosses ( Encalypta ), also called bell hats, are a genus of deciduous mosses from the Encalyptaceae family .
description
Mosses of this genus grow in low cushions or flat lawns. The plants have upright, forked stems. These are densely leafed and tomentose in the lower part. Leaves are more or less tongue-shaped, have a strong rib that ends either in front of or in the leaf tip or protrudes above it as a spike tip or glass hair. Characteristic of the sporophytes are the long, cylindrical-bell-shaped calyptres that completely envelop the spore capsules.
