The Encalyptaceae are a family of acrocarpic mosses , the only one in the order Encalyptales and the subclass Encalyptidae .

description

These are rather small, upright mosses.

Their leaves are elongated tongue-shaped. Your midrib extends to the tip of the leaf. The cells of the leaf blade are rounded. In the lower part of the leaves they are larger, transparent and smooth, towards the upper part of the leaves they are cloudy, dull and papilose , the transition being gradual.

The cylindrical capsules stand upright on a more or less long seta . They are always completely enveloped by a large, bell-shaped, smooth or at most slightly striped kalyptra . The peristome can be designed very differently.

distribution

The Encalyptaceae inhabit cold and temperate zones, especially the northern hemisphere. Some species are also found in the high mountains of the tropics . The species grow on earth or rock. Many species prefer calcareous rock.
