The Encyclopedia Dramatica is a large, advertising-financed English language satirical wiki similar to the German language Kamelopedia , Stupidedia or Uncyclopedia . The focus of the article is on net culture , net language , especially the ethnology of the imageboards and their memes, as well as drama or sensations and human fates that are dramatically exploited by the media. The content of the Encyclopaedia Dramatica is designed for adults as it contains numerous articles about shocking sites and pornographic content.

history

prehistory

The founder of the Encyclopedia Dramatica, Sherrod DeGrippo, known as Girlvinyl , has been active on the blogging website LiveJournal since 2000 . She soon became aware of the numerous quarrels and other eccentric behavior of LiveJournal users, whose behavior and personalities she found fascinating. So she became part of the LJDrama LiveJournal community , founded in June 2002 , which documented the personalities of the site and their stories and trolled them . In September 2002 LiveJournal blocked the group, which then switched to its own website.

One of the main targets of the group was Joshua Williams, known on the site as Mediacrat , whose separation from another LiveJournal user in the summer of 2004 led to great tension on the site. Among other things, intimate photos of Williams were distributed. LJDrama played a major role in these events. Williams perceived the incident as a nuisance, threatened legal consequences and traveled to Portland to speak to the LiveJournal administration.

The LJDrama community then wrote a Wikipedia article about Williams for long-term documentation, which was soon deleted. In order to still be able to offer this and similar articles a platform, DeGrippo founded the Encyclopedia Dramatica in December 2004 at the web address encyclopediadramatica.com .

First page

The site, which was initially just an extension of LJDrama , soon grew into a general, humorous encyclopedia of internet culture and happenings, eager to shock readers. DeGrippo became less and less active over time and left the administration to others. On April 15, 2011, DeGrippo made the web address of Encyclopedia Dramatica a redirect to ohinternet.com , a new site that should document memes and internet culture without shock images and other profanity . As reasons for this step, DeGrippo stated that Encyclopedia Dramatica had strayed too far from its roots and shock humor had become old. The Encyclopedia-Dramatica-Community massively criticized DeGrippo and accused her of having created a clone of Know Your Meme without any appeal of its own.

Various users of the encyclopedia then attempted to save and mirror as much of the old page as possible via archived websites and web caches in an action called Operation Restoration . A large part of the content of the old Encyclopedia Dramatica could finally be mirrored on encyclopediadramatica.ch , a website operated by Ryan Cleary. On July 22, 2011, Encyclopedia Dramatica went fully online again.

Second page

On June 21, 2011, Ryan Cleary was arrested in connection with the LulzSec hacks. Garret Moore then took over the operation of the site. Brian Zaiger soon followed suit. Zaiger was replaced by Joseph Evers in February 2018.

Content

The website is referred to as the "online compendium of troll humor and lore" (for example: online textbook on troll humor and traditional knowledge). A particular focus is on network culture and internet phenomena , but also classic topics of an encyclopedia such as historical events, countries, religions and cultures are dealt with in a satirical way. Above all, controversial, black humor is used and strongly exaggerated racist and cultural stereotypes are taken up. Thus Muslims as terrorists , Jews as greedy Zionists and women designated as inferior to men in every way sex objects.

Such potentially offensive, infringing or shocking contents are, as their humorous effect sometimes a central aspect of the glee results over raging Dende reactions irate reader. The motto of the page " in lulz we trust " is a corruption of the official election award made by the United States, " In God we trust ", and means about translated " on schadenfreude we trust ". This is taken to extremes by a notice in particularly controversial articles in which users who feel hurt or offended by the content are asked to follow a special link. However, this is just another prank . The user does not expect a complaint form, but a collection of shocking and pornographic images that takes several pages. This humor, which is mainly based on malicious pleasure and provocation, is also known as trolling in net jargon .

The concentrated processing of the internet culture led to the designation as the oracle of internet memes . Due to its thematic focus, 'Encyclopedia Dramatica' has gained recognition in the description of Internet phenomena and is referenced by numerous media.

On December 16, 2008, the Encyclopedia Dramatica won the Mashable OPEN WEB AWARDS: People's Choice Winners in the best wiki category.

MSN News quotes the satire of a self-perception with the words: Wikipedia is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) in which participants play editors of a hypothetical online encyclopedia ... a fairly obvious rip-off from Encyclopedia Dramatica. (German: Wikipedia is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in which the participants play authors of a hypothetical online encyclopedia ... an obviously cheap idea theft from Encyclopedia Dramatica). The New York Times tersely comments on the ED as Wikipedia's anti-fansite . The Times points in an article to the importance of ED alongside 4chan on network culture and the Anonymous movement.
