Engelbert Nelle

Engelbert Nelle (born June 9, 1933 in Essen ; † August 22, 2016 in Hildesheim ) was a German politician ( CDU ) and sports official .

Life

Engelbert Nelle graduated from the Laurentianum in Arnsberg in 1954 , attended the vocational school in Neheim-Hüsten and did an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk . In 1956 he passed the commercial assistant examination in Arnsberg. He then studied at the University of Cologne , graduating in 1961 as a commercial teacher. In 1956 in Cologne he became a member of the Catholic student association WKSt.V. Unitas Landshut Cologne.

From 1961 to 1962 he was President of the Catholic German Student Union , from 1962 to 1964 employed by the Episcopal Vicariate in Cologne, from 1964 to 1980 head of training at Robert Bosch in Hildesheim and member of the board of trustees of the University for Working People. He became the coach of Blau-Weiß Neuhof and in 1980 the youth chairman of the Lower Saxony Football Association. In 1988 he became President of the Lower Saxony and in 1989 of the North German Football Association as well as a member of the Presidium of the German Football Association . In 1998 he became Vice President of the DFB. Until 2005 he remained president of the North German Football Association.

For his services to sport in Lower Saxony , he was included in the Lower Saxony Sports Honor Gallery of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History. In 2002 Nelle received an honorary doctorate from the University of Plovdiv in Bulgaria.

After his death, a minute's silence was held in his honor at the international soccer match between Germany and Finland on August 31, 2016 in Mönchengladbach .

Political career

In 1969 Engelbert Nelle joined the CDU. From 1972 to 1981 he was councilor of the city of Hildesheim and from 1975 parliamentary group chairman, at the same time local council member of Hildesheim-Neuhof and local mayor or his deputy.

From 1980 to 1998 he was a member of the Bundestag , from 1983 as a directly elected member of the Gifhorn - Peine constituency . From 1983 to 1994 Nelle was deputy chairman of the Committee for Education and Science , from 1985 to 1994 sports policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group .
