Engelschalk II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engelschalk II was Margrave of the Ostmark at the end of the 9th century .

Life

He was probably a son of Margrave Wilhelm II or his brother, Margrave Engelschalk I , but was not considered as a successor.

He succeeded in forcing the new Margrave Aribo I to fight for many years and even to displace him at times, but he had to admit defeat at the latest in 882, when Aribo I was reinstated.

Although Engelschalk was supported by Arnulf of Carinthia , when Arnulf became king in 887 his opponent had consolidated his power to such an extent that the new king confirmed Aribo as margrave and instead dropped Engelschalk.

Before 893 Engelschalk kidnapped Arnulf's illegitimate daughter Ellinrat (and presumably also married her) in order to emphasize his demands, but then had to flee to Moravia . He was able to reconcile himself with Arnulf afterwards, but in 893 a trial against Engelschalk took place in Regensburg , of which Arnulf had no knowledge. The negotiation was initiated by the Bavarian nobility in order to prevent Engelschalk from taking a special position. He was convicted and blinded .
