Ernst , called the Brave , (* around 1027 - 10 June 1075 ) was Margrave of Austria from 1055 to 1075 .

He followed his father Adalbert and united the Bohemian Mark with the Hungarian Mark and the Mark Austria. The colonization of the Waldviertel by the Kuenringer began at that time . At the beginning of the investiture controversy , he was on the side of Henry IV and fell as his henchman in the battle of Homburg an der Unstrut .

Marriage and offspring

In his first marriage he married Adelheid († 1071) in 1060, the daughter of Margrave Dedis II (also Dedo) of Meissen from the Wettin family . He had the following children with her:

  • Luitpold II (* 1050, † October 12, 1095), Margrave of Austria 1075-1095, ∞ Itha (from Formbach- Ratelnberg), widow to Haderich (from Schwarzenburg)?
  • Justizia († between 1120/22), ∞ Count Otto II. (III.) Von Wolfratshausen
  • Adalbert von Pernegg , Count von Bogen

In his second marriage in 1072 he married a Suanhild († 1120), daughter of Count Sighard VII of Hungary and granddaughter of Count Palatine Hartwig II of Bavaria on her mother's side . This marriage remained childless.
