Adalbert the Victorious (* around 985 ; † May 26, 1055 in Melk ) from the Babenberg family was Margrave of Austria from 1018 to 1055.

Adalbert was Count in Schweinachgau (Lower Bavaria) in 1010 , Count in Künziggau (Lower Bavaria) in 1011 , and in 1018 he was the successor of his brother Heinrich I the Strong as Margrave of the Mark of Austria.

He extended the eastern border of the Bavarian Marcha Orientalis to the March and the Leitha and supported King Heinrich III. in the fight against Hungary and Bohemia . He resided in the Lower Austrian Babenbergerburg Melk , where the Melk Abbey was later built .

He was married to Glismod , the sister of Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn , and then to Frowiza , the daughter of Doge Ottone Orseolo , and thus the brother-in-law of the Hungarian King Peter Orseolo .

  • His son Leopold (Luitpold, Lippold) died in 1043 as the newly appointed margrave of the Hungarian march .
  • His son Ernst became his successor in the margraviate of Austria.
