Enrico Pietro Galeazzi

Conte (Count) Enrico Pietro Galeazzi (born August 27, 1896 in Rome ; † September 25, 1986 there ) was an Italian architect .

Life

Enrico Pietro Galeazzi came from a patrician family from Perugia . His father Goffredo Galeazzi was a grand officer in the royal house of Italy ; his mother Emma was a born Baroness von Coletti. On January 3, 1923, he married Ida Filippucci; the only child from the marriage was Maria Luisa.

Enrico studied at the Instituto Massimo and was a member of the engineering corps of the Italian armed forces during the First World War, most recently with the rank of captain. He then completed an architecture and engineering degree. The Roman Basilica of Sant'Eugenio and the campus of the Pontifical North America College were built according to his designs .

Galeazzi got involved in various social projects of the Columbus Knights , a Roman Catholic lay association . Here he worked with Cardinal Pacelli, who later became Pope Pius XII. On April 3, 1939, he was appointed a delegate of the Knights of Columbus. On April 8, 1939, he was appointed architect of the Holy Apostolic Palaces, director of the cathedral building works of St. Peter and general director for the technical and economic services of the Apostolic House. During the Second World War, Galeazzi was a diplomat for the Holy See in the Vatican and in the United States. He was among other things with the mission of Pius XII. entrusted to seek assistance from President Roosevelt in protecting Rome and the Vatican. Because of his activities, he was appointed lieutenant general by the Italian king and count on November 23, 1943 . Enrico Pietro Galeazzi has received several awards. Among other things, he was accepted into the Order of Malta in 1943 .

In 1968 Galeazzi retired, but continued to work for the Columbus Knights, who financed a general cleaning of the facade of St. Peter's Basilica in 1986 .

Enrico Pietro Galeazzi was buried in the crypt of the North American College in Rome.
