Enrico Sertoli

Enrico Sertoli (* 6. June 1842 in Sondrio , † 28 January 1910 ) was an Italian physiologist and histologist , which was later named after him Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules ( seminiferous tubules described).

Life

Enrico Sertoli was one of the five sons of the architect Giuseppe Sertoli. He studied medicine at the University of Pavia . Eusebio Oehl was one of his teachers . Sertoli completed his studies in 1865 and went to the University of Vienna to do research with Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke . The following year he returned to Italy to take part in the war of 1866 . Sertoli fought under Enrico Guicciardi in northern Italy against Austria and was then sent to Palermo to suppress an uprising .

In 1867 Sertoli left the military and went to the University of Tübingen , where he examined the function of blood proteins and the elimination of carbonic acid with Felix Hoppe-Seyler .

From 1870 Sertoli was Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at the Royal School of Veterinary Medicine in Milan . After restructuring the institute, he was only a lecturer in physiology. In 1907 he retired and settled in his birthplace, where he died in 1910.

Enrico Sertoli was not married and had no children.

Act

1865 Sertoli described the morphology of the later named after him Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules ( seminiferous tubules ).
