Enrique Mateos Mancebo (born July 15, 1934 in Madrid , † July 6, 2001 in Seville ), called "Fifirichi" , was a Spanish football player and coach.

career

Enrique Mateos was a physically fragile player, but he compensated his physical deficits with technique as well as opportunism and callousness in front of the goal. He began his career at AD Plus Ultra , Real Madrid's second team at the time . Although he had his first appearances with the professionals in 1953, it was not until the 1956/57 season that he was finally accepted into the first team's squad. This season was also his most successful with the capital city with 14 goals in 21 games. He also played a major role in the final victory in the 1958/59 European Cup . Mateos scored the opening goal against Stade de Reims - after he had missed a penalty in the early stages of the game . With the arrival of his former teammate Miguel Muñoz as coach, who soon began to introduce a generation change in the team, his appearances became less frequent and in 1961 his time with the Spanish record champions ended. He moved to Sevilla FC for three seasons , where he reached the cup final in 1962 , and later to local rivals Betis . After a season at Gimnástica de Torrelavega , he began an adventurous stage that led him first to the North American Soccer League , to the Cleveland Stokers , where he was promptly voted the best player in the league, and the following year to Johannesburg , East London Celtic , where he only played for three months.

Trainer

After returning to Spain, he began to train various amateur teams such as Fuencarral and Pegaso Tres Cantos before moving to Cádiz FC in 1976 . The Andalusians made the first promotion to the Primera División in the club's history. After two seasons he moved to Deportivo La Coruña , his last stop in top sport.
