The ensemble marketplace in Kößlarn , a municipality in the Lower Bavarian district of Passau is a building complex , which under monument stands.

The ensemble encompasses the wide, hook-shaped market street. It is the middle part of a street settlement that follows an old west-east road, winding several times.

history

The settlement did not develop until the late Middle Ages due to a pilgrimage that began with the miraculous image found in Kößlhof in 1364 . In this former wasteland , which still exists as a courtyard on the southern edge of the market, the pilgrimage church of the Holy Trinity was built around 1400 and the craftsmen's settlement on both sides of the street since the 15th century.

In 1488 Kößlarn was named as a ducal market . The pilgrimage was the largest Marian pilgrimage in Lower Bavaria at that time . The flourishing traffic and handling of goods in the area attracted traders, craftsmen and innkeepers. The spiritual care of the pilgrimage lay with the Cistercian Abbey of Aldersbach .

description

Until the middle of the 19th century, the almost closed development of the market square consisted mostly of block buildings with flat saddle roofs . Some plastered representatives of this type of house with a wide roof projection have survived in the eastern part of the square. On the north side, some eaves side houses were built after the fire of 1868.

The angled part of the market square, rising to the northwest, is dominated by the building group of the former pilgrimage church, now the parish church, the churchyard fortifications and the associated parish, beneficiary , sacristan's and gatehouses .

The church was further expanded in the 15th and early 16th centuries and surrounded by a closed ring of fortifications with a wall, battlements and four gates, which offered protection to the church's treasures as well as to the residents of the otherwise unpaved market.

In front of the church to the south are the rectory and stately gable and eaves side houses, including the town hall. Among the other houses, some characteristic half- hipped buildings are worth mentioning.
