The Heiligste Dreifaltigkeit parish church in Kößlarn is a medieval fortified and pilgrimage church .

History of the pilgrimage from Kößlarn

The pilgrimage from Kößlarn goes back to a report according to which a count of Ortenburg found an image of Mary here in 1364 and built a chapel for it . Many pilgrims soon turned up. Thanks to their donations , a church was built in 1400, around which a village gradually developed. 1440 to 1443, 1451 and from 1461 onwards there were constant expansions and the construction of a stately defense system. Abbot Wolfgang Marius von Aldersbach had a spacious choir added from 1515 to 1518 and equipped the church with seven altars. The pilgrimage pastoral care was the responsibility of the Cistercians from the Aldersbach monastery . In 1478 Kößlarn became a vicariate , in 1518 a parish . Up until the Reformation , Kößlarn was one of the most visited Marian pilgrimage sites in Bavaria , after which the pilgrimage was only of regional importance.

description

The Silver Madonna

The church bills have been preserved almost completely since 1461, so that the artists and craftsmen involved in the construction of the massive fortification are known. The master builder was Michael Sallinger from 1461 to 1480 and Hans Wechselberger from 1481. The church is surrounded by a firmly attached wall belt, to which two gates and the parish , sacristan and beneficiary house belong. It is surmounted by a 50 meter high tower built in 1509 , which received a dome in 1730 .

The nave is essentially a late Gothic work , the side aisles were added in 1897. The interior is baroque . The high altar from 1708 was made by the sculptor Thomas Stöber, the painter Johann Paul Vogl and the carpenter Michael Jörg. On the high altar is the miraculous image , a Gothic wooden Madonna with the child from around 1400. Her clothing and the crown are works of the 18th century. Her shrine and the tabernacle were created in 1779 by the Passau sculptor Joseph Deutschmann . A special showpiece of the Kößlarner Church is the Gothic Silver Madonna by Balthasar Waltenberger from 1488. It is in its own votive room .
