Ensom (German: lonely ) is the title of a song by the Danish singer Medina . The song was written by Medina, Rasmus Stabell and Jeppe Federspiel. The song was produced by the Danish duo Providers, consisting of Stabell and Federspiel.
The American singer Terri Bjerre was also hired for the English translation of Lonely .
Background information
The Danish version of the song, Ensom , was released in November 2009 as the third single from the album of the same name after Velkommen Til Medina . Also Ensom was a success in Denmark, reaching # 2 on the singles chart. Shortly thereafter, the song went platinum for 15,000 units sold. Ensom was in the top 75 of the Danish single charts for a total of 43 weeks.
Medina sang the song in 2010 at the finale of the Danish version of the talent show The X Factor with the winner Thomas Ring Petersen. She also sang Ensom in one of Denmark's biggest Christmas shows. She was accompanied by a big band . Medina first presented the song in Germany at The Dome 55 .
Due to its great success, the song was translated into English for Medina's international debut Welcome To Medina . Lonely was born on 3 September 2010 as the second single release by You & I published. Lonely entered the German single charts at number 33 in the first week and reached its highest position at number 26 in the third week of the chart.

Musical design
Ensom and Lonely are electro and europop songs. Musically, they are a "combination of rich bass, electronic elements, large-scale synthesizer landscapes, sticky beats and poppy melodies". A guitar can be heard in the background. The Danish version is about a minute longer than the English translation.
Subject
The lyrics of the two songs are about being abandoned. In the stanzas, Medina sings about the time together, how she felt safe with her partner and about the first problems. The chorus is about life after the breakup. Medina wishes loneliness to her former partner for the fact that he has left her. Also, is sampling Lonely Medina song You & I .
Criticism
Critics had mixed reactions to the song. Matthias Reichel from cdstarts.de praised the music style and the composition of Lonely , but continued to write: "Only the slightly hypothermic attitude in the singing of the 27-year-olds does not fit into this 90s revue." Pooltrax.com wrote in the album review, that Medina " tries [...] with Lonely [...] to keep her dance level, but can't keep up with the debut single," Heute.At Lonely names a song with a hypnotic sound on a chorus to sing along with.
Music video
The music video for Ensom was shot by Danish director Tomace. It shows Medina in a large hall, flanked by two dancers, one of whom is Medina's friend. Across from her is a person who is tied to a chair and whose face is covered. Medina begins to whisper in the person's ear and puts a cake in front of them. This cake is in the shape of a heart that has broken apart in the middle, the topping is made of maggots. In another scene, Medina can be seen on a magnificent armchair, stroking a stuffed wolf and singing into the camera. It later emerges that the person being tied up is Medina herself.
Tomace, the director of the video, wrote on his website that he proceeded differently with the music video than usual: “I wanted to tell a simple story at one location, and not have to do unnecessary post-processing. Usually, pop videos are very fast, with lots of pictures and impressions. Not this video. A lot of people have asked me about the concept because they don't understand the end of the video. Of course there are several perspectives, but what Medina and I wanted to say with the video was: It's not always the other's fault when a relationship breaks down and you feel lonely. Sometimes it's up to you, and you don't notice until it's too late. "
The music video for Lonely was shot in Berlin in summer 2010. The video has no specific plot, but shows Medina again with her dancers, who dance in front of several different backgrounds and use fluorescent tubes as dance sticks.
