Environ was a New York jazz music and visual arts venue that existed on the Lower East Side in the second half of the 1970s and was known as the " Off-Off-Broadway of music ".

The Environ (on the eleventh floor of 476 Broadway, between Broome and Grand Street) was founded by jazz pianist and artist John Fischer and singer Jay Clayton after Brubeck sons Chris and Danny gave him half of a loft on Broadway .

The venue was one of the defining venues of the New York loft scene , including Sam Rivers 'Studio Rivbea, Rashied Alis Ali's Alley , The Ladies' Fort by Joe Lee Wilson , Studio We , Warren Smith's Studio WIS , The Brook and z . Sometimes The Tin Palace also counted. I.a. have performed at Environ Dollar Brand , Muhal Richard Abrams , the Art Ensemble of Chicago , Chico Freeman , Air , Anthony Braxton , Leroy Jenkins , Joseph Bowie , Charles Bobo Shaw , Arthur Blythe , Charles Tyler , Julius Hemphill , Olu Dara and Hamiet Bluiett .

Live recordings of John Fischer and his band project Interface ( Interface Live at Environ , with Perry Robinson , Mark Whitecage , Charles Tyler , Rick Kilburn and Phillip Wilson ), also by Steve Lacy , Jerome Cooper ( Root Assumptions ), were made in Environ between 1976 and the end of 1978 , Gunter Hampel ( Flying Carpet ), Kenny Davern ( Umexpected , with Steve Lacy, Steve Swallow , Paul Motian ), Butch Morris ( In Touch ... But out of Reach , with Grachan Moncur III , Charles Eubanks , Wilber Morris , Bobby Battle and Steve McCall ). In 1977 the (second) New York Jazz Loft Celebration Festival took place, with 30 events at four venues (Environ, Jazzmania, Ladies' Fort, the Brook). The Environ closed around 1979/80 .
