He came from a Pomeranian aristocratic family, started a spiritual career and joined the convent of the Eldena monastery. In 1490 he participated in the removal of Abbot Gregorius Groper. Under his successor Lambert von Werle , he became subprior in 1494 .

In 1510 he was ordained abbot of the Eldena monastery by the Camminer bishop Martin Karith . The introductory sermon was given by the Greifswald theologian Wichmann Kruse . As abbot, Enwald Schinkel was in charge of the supervision ( patrocinium ) of the theological faculty of the University of Greifswald, which he headed as rector in 1513. Kruse was his vice-rector at the time.

After the secularization of the monastery in 1535 , Enwald Schinkel and his prior Michael Knabe were able to keep their residence in the monastery until their death. Both got a pension and looked at the library they had collected, which later went to the Petrikirche in Wolgast and from there to the University of Greifswald.
