Lambert von Werle SOCist (* in Greifswald ; † December 21, 1500 in Eldena Monastery ) was the abbot of Eldena Monastery.

Life

He came from a Greifswald family that was temporarily represented on the city council. Lambert was first mentioned by name in 1477 as a member of the convent . From 1479 he was court master of the monastery estates on Rügen ( Mönchgut ).

In 1486 he was after the death of Abbot Nicholas III. nominated by part of the convention as its successor, but the opposing party, who elected Gregor Groper as the new abbot, was able to prevail. After Groper caused offense with his unrestrained way of life and wasted the goods of the monastery, he was deposed with the support of the Pomeranian Duke Bogislaw X. and died in dungeon in 1491. Lambert von Werle, elected abbot after his dismissal in 1490, had to lead a lengthy trial against the friends of Gropers, which the Roman Curia decided in his favor in 1494 .

In his subsequent years in office he worked on the repair of the damage caused by his predecessor and represented the monastery as a prelate in the Pomeranian diets . After his death he was buried in the Eldena monastery church. His dog Ajax was also shown on his grave slab.
