The Defense 2 is a military facility in the New Danube in the south of Vienna . It creates a connection to the Danube Island for pedestrians and cyclists . It was completed in 1988.
Like the other two weirs on the New Danube, weir 2 is used to regulate the water level of the New Danube. It consists of five weir fields with a clear width of 30.6 meters . It is a rigid system, which means that, unlike the weir systems in power plants, it is normally not moved. The weir locks are hydraulically operated pressure segments with a fixed spill hood. In the case of weir 2, there is also a flap with two locks. Since it can happen with this weir that the water flows through in the opposite direction, the segments are also designed for tensile loads.
Since the first test drillings for this structure revealed that the Tegel is only 40 meters deep and is covered by very water-permeable sands , the site first had to be moved 470 meters from the planned site. A necessary remediation of contaminated sites in the Lobau then forced a further shift by 50 meters.
