The weir 1 is a fortification in the New Danube in Vienna . It is located around the end of the Old Danube . It creates a connection to the Danube Island for pedestrians and cyclists . It was built from 1976 to 1978.
Building
Like the other two weirs on the New Danube, weir 1 serves to regulate the water level of the New Danube. It consists of five weir fields with a clear width of 25 meters. It is a rigid system, which means that, unlike the weir systems in power plants, it is normally not moved. The weir locks are hydraulically operated pressure segments with a fixed spill hood.
Weir 1 was founded on diaphragm walls in tertiary sands and tegels . A fault zone was found during the exploration boreholes, so that the weir axis had to be shifted.
Hydroelectric power plant
From summer 2016, an underground hydropower plant was built as a joint project between Wien Energie and MA 45 - Wiener Gewässer. With an average output of 45 kW, the needs of around 130 households are to be covered. The construction costs were around 1.8 million euros. Instead of the turbines used in conventional hydropower plants, a hydropower screw is used, which uses the height difference of around 3.5 meters and works on the principle of an Archimedean screw . The screw is 15 meters long with a diameter of 3.20 meters and moves at 25 revolutions per minute during operation. The power plant started operations in June 2017.
