Danube city bridge

The Donaustadtbrücke has been an underground bridge over the Danube and New Danube since 2010 and connects the 2nd district of Vienna , Leopoldstadt , with the 22nd district, Donaustadt . Before that, it was in operation as a road bridge from 1997 to 2006. The bridge runs upstream of the Prater Bridge , Austria's busiest motorway section, a short distance from it near the Ernst Happel Stadium and the Kaisermühlen junction on the south- east bypass .

To the south of the bridge, in the 2nd district, is the Donaumarina underground station , to the north the Donaustadtbrücke station in the 22nd district. The route of the U2 will continue in both directions at an elevated position; the total length of the elevated route is currently around six kilometers. Footpaths and cycle paths were and are not available, but there are on the neighboring Prater Bridge.

The Donaustadtbrücke consists of two parts. The structure over the Danube is designed as a single-hip cable - stayed bridge with an A pylon. The steel pylon with a height of 85 meters has a distinctive, crest-shaped head. The Danube Island and the New Danube are spanned by a girder bridge. The construction as a steel cable-stayed bridge with a pylon construction comes from the civil engineer Alfred Pauser in cooperation with the architects Wilhelm Holzbauer and Heinz Marschalek.

history

Construction began in 1995, and the bridge was opened to traffic in 1997. The bridge served with two lanes as a diversion route for the Prater Bridge, which was restricted to four lanes due to construction work . From 1998 it was only used by the buses of Wiener Linien . There was a two-lane carriageway.

The Donaustadtbrücke was designed from the outset as a structure for the expansion of the Vienna subway. In 2006, the bridge was closed to car traffic, handed over to the administration of Wiener Linien and adapted for use by the underground. Among other things, in 2008 the number of suspension ropes on the bridge was doubled from five to ten pairs of ropes per side. The pylon had already been prepared for this doubling during the construction period. The extension of the U2 line from the Stadion station via the Donaustadtbrücke to Aspernstrasse was approved on October 2, 2010. During the construction period, the buses ran again over the Prater Bridge ; With the extension of the U2, bus traffic on this route was completely discontinued.
