The Steinitzsteg , previously Nordsteg , is a bridge over the Danube and the New Danube in Vienna and connects the districts of Brigittenau and Floridsdorf . The 875 m long bridge, completed in 1995, was used in 1996 as a temporary bridge with two lanes for the general refurbishment of the north bridge and then opened for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The footbridge was designed by the Viennese architect Johann Georg Gsteu and named in 2009 after world chess champion Wilhelm Steinitz , in whose honor an explanatory board was placed on the bridge on the 110th anniversary of his death in summer 2010.

During the general renovation of the north bridge in 1996, two lanes were diverted over the north footbridge. In 1997 the bridge was cleaned and prepared for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, but it can be prepared again at any time for the diversion of motor vehicle traffic with little effort.

Building

The Steinitzsteg runs downstream of the north bridge. It first crosses the Handelskai and the tracks of the Donauuferbahn with a reinforced concrete bridge , then it crosses the Danube approximately parallel to the north bridge at a distance of 40 m with a 411 m long steel box girder with a trapezoidal cross-section. The Danube Island is crossed with another reinforced concrete bridge, which is connected to the paths on the island with a descent. The New Danube and the Hubertusdamm are again crossed with a steel box girder, which lies in a curve of 700 m radius. The point of the footbridge furthest away from the north bridge is about 80 m away from it. The ramp leading from the north bridge to the A22 Danube bank motorway is crossed with a frame bridge. This is followed by the reinforced concrete bridge that crosses the motorway itself.
