The Georg-Danzer-Steg is a bridge that connects the Vienna districts of Brigittenau (20th) and Floridsdorf (21st). The bicycle and pedestrian crossing that leads across the Danube , the Danube Island and the New Danube is named after the songwriter Georg Danzer , who died in 2007. The footbridge is part of the U6 Danube bridge (official language), which was built on the occasion of the extension of the U6 underground line to Floridsdorf. A footbridge was also planned because of only a small additional effort, which also connects the footpath and cycle path network between the two districts. The bridge structure runs right next to the northern railway bridge , over which the rail traffic of the Austrian Federal Railways runs.

The jetty got its current name in 2009; Whether the name also includes the U6 Danube bridge itself is not handled uniformly in practice.

history

Emergence

Construction of the railway bridge and footbridge began in 1991, and the opening took place on May 4, 1996 on the entire section between Spittelau and Floridsdorf .

Naming

The naming of the previously unnamed bridge structure as Georg-Danzer-Steg was unanimously decided by the responsible municipal council committee for culture and science on March 31, 2009. The reason given by the City of Vienna is that "Georg Danzer [...] was one of the artists who [were] part of the rebuilding of the Reichsbrücke from 2003 to 2005 at the festive event on the occasion of '25 Years of the Reichsbrücke '." therefore "a tribute to the deceased artist, as this footbridge is a much-used entrance during the annual Danube Island Festival."

Based on the sources cited, it is unclear whether the name Georg-Danzer-Steg encompasses the entire bridge structure, including the bridge sections of the U6 Danube bridge (as objects of Wiener Linien ), or whether it only includes those under Municipal Department 29 (bridge construction and foundation engineering) Footbridges for bicycle and pedestrian traffic on the outside of the river bridge and under the bridge over the New Danube were named.

Public transport

Just like the north railway bridge running parallel (upstream) over the Danube ( rapid transit main line and regional railway traffic), the U6 Danube bridge also connects the 20th district , Brigittenau , on the southwestern, right bank of the Danube with the 21st district, Floridsdorf, on the northeastern, left bank of the New Danube. While the two power bridges are only a few meters apart, "[runs] in order to give the matter more spatial tension [...]" the bridge section crossing the New Danube with the "underground line is not exactly parallel to the railway, but swings towards the station building in a gentle curve. This has [...] the result that 'residual space' is not only created under the two lines, but also between them. "

The joint traffic station Wien Handelskai ( Wien Handelskai, S-Bahn, and Handelskai, U6) is located at the southwestern Brigittenauer bridgehead and is designed as a transfer hub. On the city side, the reception building connects the Handelskai with the Millennium Tower or the Millennium City downstream and the Rivergate upstream, with the island platform of the Donauuferbahn (suburban line S45) , which is parallel at street level, and with the S-Bahn and U-Bahn side platforms in elevated position and the exit at the level of the embankment.

At the northeastern Floridsdorf bridgehead near the abandoned S-Bahn station Wien Strandbäder , the subway station Neue Donau is also located on the roof of the Donauuferautobahn between Hubertusdamm and (Am) Rollerdamm . The Neue Donau bus turning point is the final stop of bus line 20A with connections to the Alte Donau and the legendary beach baths, Arbeiterstrandbad , Alte Donau and Bundessportbad as well as to the U1 station Kaisermühlen-VIC (Reichsbrücke) and the Danube Tower .

With the two stations, the subway bridge has a similar arrangement as the Donaustadtbrücke with the subway line U2 . In contrast to the Reichsbrücke with the (enclosed) underground line U1 , the two U6 stations are as close as possible to the Danube and New Danube banks, but there is no getting off on the Danube Island itself.

Private transport

At the northeastern bridgehead there is a parking lot for vehicles with around 40 parking spaces next to the Neue Donau bus turning point (see above).

Unlike the neighboring Nordbahnbrücke with the footbridge on the Nordbahnbrücke (also: footbridge on the Nordwestbahn ) that is not accessible to the public , the U-Bahn bridge has a cycle and footpath connection, which, like the Reichsbrücke and the Praterbrücke , is non-motorized Danube crossing possible on this river section. The three subway bridge sections with differently arranged pedestrian and bicycle traffic systems are a special feature:

  • The bridge section over the Danube river (river bridge) is designed with two external side bars attached to the lower level of the box profile of the underground bridge. The higher level of the track thus results in boundary walls to the two cycle and footpaths. Two tower-like stone structures each upstream and downstream with spiral ramps and stairs serve to develop the dam (right bank of the Danube) and island (left bank of the Danube) up to the level of the footbridges.
  • The Danube Island is crossed by bicycle and pedestrian traffic at ground level, the bridge section over the island is therefore designed exclusively as a subway bridge.
  • The crossing over the bridge section over the New Danube is designed as a route suspended beneath the actual bridge structure, which joins level-free both on the Danube Island and on the northeast embankment, directly opposite the subway entrance of the Neue Donau station.
