Martin Karith , also Carith , Caritte , Charitius or Karethe (* in Kolberg ; † November 26, 1521 in Stettin ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and Bishop of Cammin at the beginning of the 16th century .

Life

Martin Karith came from a Kolberg patrician dynasty that primarily operated with salt. His father was the city treasurer in Kolberg. He studied from 1465 at the University of Rostock and from 1473 at the University of Greifswald . In 1481 he was archdeacon in Arnswalde . From 1483 he was a teacher ("lector ordinarius in antiquis juribus") at the Greifswald University. There he became a doctor of canon law on September 3, 1487 and a month later rector of the university. On February 7, 1491, he was appointed head of the Greifswald deanery , which he resigned when he received the deanery at the Kolberg cathedral chapter on November 17, 1492 .

From the end of 1496 he accompanied Duke Bogislaw X. of Pomerania as his Chancellor and Privy Councilor to Worms and then on his pilgrimage to the Holy Land . On the return journey he was in Rome by Pope Alexander VI. appointed coadjutor of the diocese of Cammin. In Venice he found recognition for his rhetorical skills. After returning home, he became the praepositus of St. Mary's Church in Szczecin .

After the previous Bishop of Cammin, Benedikt von Waldstein, resigned for a generous settlement, Martin Karith was elected Bishop of Cammin in 1498. In July 1500 he confirmed the foundation of a school in Szczecin by the Duke, which was a predecessor of the later Szczecin pedagogy . In October 1500 he convened a diocesan synod in Stettin, on which synodal statutes were issued with prohibitions against moral aberrations by the clergy. The focus of this first printed church ordinance of the Camminer diocese, which was expanded in the following years, was alchemy and the moral relationship between monks and nuns.

He expanded the jurisdiction of Abbess Elisabeth von Krummin , who was a daughter of Bogislaw X. In 1508 he appointed his illegitimate son Christoph von Pommern as archdeacon of Usedom . He expanded the possessions of the diocese by buying Quackenburg in 1509 and the Dargun monastery in 1512 in Bast near Köslin . In 1514 Karith had the Marienkirche in Pölitz rebuilt, of which only the sacristy remains as a chapel today.

In 1512 the city of Kolberg , located in the diocese of Cammin, had Simon Lohde, suspected of road robbery, executed. Since the ducal jurisdiction had been circumvented here, apparently with the knowledge of the bishop, a dispute between Bogislaw X. and Martin Karith arose. The duke accused the bishop of causing the unrest that broke out in Western Pomerania after the beheading of Lohde.

The relationship with the Duke deteriorated further when Martin Karith suggested Count Wolfgang von Eberstein as coadjutor on the recommendation of the Brandenburg Elector Joachim I. When he received the papal confirmation in 1518, this led to protests from the duke, the cathedral chapter and the clergy of the diocese. Under threats, Bogislaw X reached that the bishop himself had to ask the Pope to withdraw this appointment and to confirm Erasmus von Manteuffel-Arnhausen, who was sponsored by the Duke, as coadjutor. Martin Karith left his coadjutor, who was confirmed by the Pope in 1519, in the last years of his life to rule the diocese, mainly for reasons of age.

During his tenure, Martin Karith showed particular interest in the order of liturgical worship. In 1505 the diocese published the " Breviarium ecclesiae Caminensis" for use in worship and in 1506 a " Missal " in printed form. In the "Liber Ordinarius" the tradition of church texts and chants was documented until the early days of the Pomeranian Church. The deviations in the use of the festival pericopes that occurred here are due to Martin Karith.

The mortal remains of Martin Karith were buried in Körlin in 1522 .
