Benedict von Waldstein
Benedikt von Waldstein (Czech Benedikt / Beneš z Valdštejna ; * around 1440; † March 18, 1505 in Hohenstadt , Moravia) was a Roman Catholic clergyman. He was Bishop of Cammin from 1485 until his resignation in 1498 .
He came from the old Bohemian gentry family Waldstein . His parents were Heník von Waldstein († 1447) and Elisabeth / Eliška von Kováň († 1478). In 1458 he obtained the degree of Magister Artium at the University of Prague . He then studied theology at the University of Kraków . He acquired canon positions in Leitmeritz , Prague , Altbunzlau and Olomouc . In 1484 he stayed at the papal court in Rome.
When the office of Bishop of Cammin in Pomerania was vacated by the resignation of Bishop Angelus Geraldini , Pope Innocent VIII appointed Benedict von Waldstein as his successor on December 2, 1485. On May 2, 1486, Benedict von Waldstein was enthroned in the Camminer Cathedral , the homage in the monastery area took place on May 28, 1486 in Kolberg .
Benedikt von Waldstein had liturgical books re-compiled and printed for his diocese. In 1492 he carried out a diocesan synod in Stargard , the resolutions of which were to regulate the spiritual life in the diocese.
He left the government in the monastery area mostly to administrators , including Georg von Puttkamer, cathedral cantor in Cammin. Incidentally, he made important concessions to the most powerful city in the monastery area, Kolberg .
In 1490 Benedict von Waldstein traveled to Rome. In 1493 he traveled to his Bohemian homeland, where he consecrated churches in Driesendorf and Dobrusch , among other places . At that time, he gave the Třeboň Monastery a richly illustrated breviary, which is now in the National Library in Prague.
Duke Bogislaw VIII of Pomerania was apparently dissatisfied with the administration by Bishop Benedikt von Waldstein. Because the Duke used a stay of several weeks in Rome on the return journey from the Holy Land , from Pope Alexander VI. to obtain permission for his travel companion Martin Karith , who was the dean of the Kolberg cathedral chapter , to be elected coadjutor and successor to Bishop Benedikt. Back in Pomerania, Martin Karith was elected coadjutor and successor by the Camminer cathedral chapter on July 4, 1498 . Faced with this, Bishop Benedikt von Waldstein decided to resign immediately. He resigned his office on August 27, 1498, received a pension in return and was able to use the Szczecin bishop's court as a retirement home. The former bishop died in 1505 on a trip to Hohenstadt in Moravia. He was buried in the castle church in Hohenstadt.
