Enzo Carli

Enzo Carli (born August 20, 1910 in Pisa , † September 26, 1999 in Siena ) was an Italian art historian and university professor.

biography

He studied the Sienese and Pisan medieval art at the University of Pisa with Mario Salmi and then with Matteo Marangoni . He finished his studies with a thesis on Tino di Camaino .

In 1937 he was appointed to the Soprintendenza of L'Aquila and transferred to Siena in 1939 . He settled in this city and became one of the personalities of cultural life, devoting himself to restoring and enhancing the artistic heritage.

He was the curator of numerous exhibitions and publications, both professional and popular science. He headed the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena until 1952, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo and was soprintendente until 1973. In the meantime, he also taught art history at the University of Siena and turned down a similar teaching post in Genoa so as not to have to move.

In 1980 he received the President of the Republic's Prize as a member emeritus of the Accademia dei Lincei . In 1995 he received the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize . He has written more than 500 titles, including essays and monographs.

He is buried in the Camposanto Monumentale , near the Piazza dei Miracoli , in Pisa.

Library and archive

Enzo Carli's library and photo library are located at the Opera della Metropolitana di Siena.

The humanistic library of the University of Siena keeps the archive donated by his children in September 2000, consisting of manuscripts, typewritten scripts, letters, photos and notes. The holdings are usually cataloged and available for inspection.
