Enzo Lippolis

Enzo Lippolis (born July 1, 1956 in Mottola ; † March 3, 2018 in Milan ) was an Italian classical archaeologist .

Enzo Lippolis spent childhood and youth in Taranto . From 1977 he studied classical archeology at the University of Perugia , which he completed with a doctoral thesis on the Palazzone necropolis in Perugia. He then went to Naples, where he worked with Antonietta Dell'Aglio on Ginosa and Laterza . In his doctorate he dealt with the naiskoi from the Taranto necropolis . He was responsible for excavations in Apulia and Emilia-Romagna . From 1989 to 1995 Lippolis was director of the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto and from 1995 to 2000 director of the Etruscan National Museum in Marzabotto . Lippolis initiated a German-Italian cooperation project to process the necropolis of Taranto. He also initiated several internationally acclaimed exhibition projects. As a university lecturer, he taught at the Università della Basilicata in Potenza from 1992 to 1995 and at the University of Lecce from 1994 to 1999 . In 2001 received a call to the chair of Classical Archeology at La Sapienza University . There, the focus of teaching was on Greek archeology and the archeology of Greater Greece. Lippolis was married and had two children.

His list of publications includes more than 250 titles. His main focus was on cultural contacts between Greeks, Romans and locals as well as between Greece and Italy, chronology and production processes as well as socio-economic transformation processes, especially in Hellenism and the early Imperial period . Since 1986 he has been a regular at the Italian School of Archeology in Athens . Most recently, he led the excavations in Gortyn . With the specialist journal Taras he founded an important forum for the archeology of Taranto and Apulia.
