Erdmann Copernicus

Erdmannus Kopernikus (also: Copernicus; * Gransee in the Mark Brandenburg ; † August 25, 1573 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a German poet , composer and lawyer .

Life

Copernicus had enrolled on May 4, 1545 at the University of Wittenberg as Ertmannus Copernicus Granselensis , here he completed the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy on February 25, 1546 . He switched to the Brandenburg University of Frankfurt in the winter semester of 1546/47 . After he had been school rector in the Neustadt Brandenburg , he continued his legal education at the University of Wittenberg in 1556 and then became professor of the institutes on the recommendation of Philipp Melanchthon .

Copernicus was in the winter semester Vice Rector, received his doctorate on 21 April 1573 Doctor of Law and was in the summer semester 1573 rector of the alma mater. The rector was so popular with the students that they asked Elector Joachim II (1505–1571) for an increase in his salary. His hymns were published posthumously in 1575.

His partly Latinized name is given in several spellings, as Erdmann / Erdmannus / Ertmannus / Erdmanus Kopernikus / Copernicus.
