Eric Ingvald Knudsen (born October 7, 1949 in Palo Alto , California ) is an American neurobiologist .

Knudsen received his bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of California, Santa Barbara , in 1971 , followed by a master's degree in neuroscience in 1973 from the same university. In 1976 he received his PhD under Theodore H. Bullock at the University of California, San Diego . As a post-doctoral student , he was with Masakazu Konishi at Caltech from 1976 to 1979 . Since 1980 he has been in the neuroscience faculty at Stanford University Medical School, where he has been a professor since 1988 and headed the faculty from 2001 to 2005. In 1983 he became a Sloan Research Fellow .

Knudsen is known for his investigation of the neural processing of the barn owl's sense of hearing , which it uses for hunting. In 1978 he and Konishi published widely acclaimed work in neurobiology on the discovery of an auditory map in the owl's brain that depicts the spatial coordinates of the sound source. They also found the mechanisms of sound localization by the owl (difference in the arrival time of the sound, asymmetry of the ears, use of different frequencies) and how they can adapt the map based on visual information.

In 2005 he received the Gruber Prize for Neuroscience . He also received the Lashley Award from the American Philosophical Society (2008), the W. Alden Spencer Award (2002), the Young Investigator Award from the Society for Neuroscience (1984), the Troland Research Award from the National Academy of Sciences (1988), and the Newcomb Cleveland Prize from AAAS (1978). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1996), the National Academy of Sciences (2002), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Philosophical Society (2016).
