Eric Marc Alexander Smaling (born August 18, 1957 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch politician . From 2007 to 2013 he was a member of the Socialist Partij in the First Chamber , from 2013 to 2017 in the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament. Smaling is a professor for sustainable agriculture at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation in Enschede .

Life

Smaling studied soil science at the Landbouwhogeschool Wageningen . In 1993 he received his doctorate in crop science. He worked for various organizations in Indonesia and Kenya and later in the DLO Staring Center in Wageningen . From 1998 to 2002 he was a university lecturer for soil inventory and land evaluation at the Landbouwhogeschool Wageningen. After a few years as a freelancer, he became a professor at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation in 2004.

Smaling lives in Weesp with his partner, the children's book author Rindest Kromhout .

Political career

In 1982 Smaling became a member there because of his admiration for the then party chairman of the Partij van de Arbeid , Jan Pronk , but left this party around 1994 in the direction of GroenLinks . After he found this party too academic, he joined the Socialist Party in 2000. In the 2007 elections to the First Chamber, Smaling was elected to the Senate and sworn in on June 12, 2013. From May 14, 2013, he became the temporary successor to Manja Smits in the Second Chamber, which resigned for health reasons. In the First Chamber he was replaced by Arda Gerkens . When Smits finally gave up her seat on April 15, 2014, his temporary membership in the Second Chamber was converted into a full one.
