Eric Walther (botanist)

Edward Eric Walther (born August 14, 1892 in Dresden , † July 1, 1959 in San Francisco ) was an American gardener and botanist . His specialties included the genus of aloes ( Aloe ) and the thick-leaf family (Crassulaceae).

Live and act

Eric Walther emigrated to the United States in 1909 . From 1917 on he was a gardener in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and eventually became director of the Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Since 1935, Eric Walther's interest has focused on the genus Echeveria . His unfinished monograph on this genre was completed by John Thomas Howell and Reid Venable Moran and appeared in 1972, thirteen years after his death.

The Echeveria species Echeveria waltheri was named after him in 1961 by Reid Moran and Jorge Meyrán .
