The Echeveria ( Echeveria , Syn . : Courantia Lem. , Oliveranthus Rose , Oliverella Rose , Urbinia Rose ) are a genus of plants from the family of thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae).

The genus is named in memory of the Mexican botanist Atanasio Echeverría y Godoy . He participated in the Spanish "Real Expedición Botánica a la Nueva España", which explored the flora of Central and North America from 1786 to 1803.

description

Echeveria are mostly evergreen, perennial, succulent plants that form more or less dense, stemless or at the end of shoots leaf rosettes. Many species also form small shrubs. The leaves are thickly fleshed. The stems of the inflorescences are formed laterally in leaf axils. The inflorescences have fleshy bracts and vary from branched thyrsenic to simple grapes with all transitions. The radial symmetry , five-fold flowers are red, orange, pink, less often yellowish or green. The sepals (sepals) and petals (petals) are angular to keeled and fused with tubing at the base; the inflorescence is thus bell-shaped to jug-shaped.

distribution

The natural home is Texas , Mexico , Central America and South America , with the exception of Guiana, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile. There are particularly many species in Mexico. With the exception of Echeveria laui , all species occur between 500 and 3000 meters above sea level.

use

Many species of this genus are cultivated as succulent ornamental plants, mainly because of the beautifully colored rosettes of leaves.
