Terumbu Siput (also: Erica reef , Chinese  簸箕 礁 , Pinyin Bòji Jiāo ) is the name of an atoll-like reef of the Spratly Islands that is only visible at low tide. It lies over 300 kilometers off the northwest coast of the state of Sabah and is claimed and controlled by Malaysia .

geography

The ring-shaped coral reef encloses a lagoon and has an oval floor plan, with a length of 3.1 km² and a maximum width of 1.7 km². There is no entrance to the lagoon. On the east side, some rocks can be visible even during high tide.

The island in the Spratly conflict

Terumbu Siput is also claimed by several nations within the conflict over the Spratly Islands . The Malaysian military maintains quite extensive facilities on the Erica Reef, including a helipad , gun emplacements and a control tower. The facilities are almost identical to those on Ardesier Reef, Mariveles Reef and Investigator Shoal.

Malaysia refers to the continental shelf argument (Shelf of Sabah and Sarawak) and the 200-mile zone in its legal claims. It claims a total of 12 southern Spratly Islands and currently holds six islands or reefs ( Ardasier Reef , Dallas Reef , Erica Reef, Investigator Shoal, Mariveles Reef, and Swallow Reef). The legal claims are well secured by the Convention on the Law of the Sea . Malaysia has a modernly equipped navy (10 missile frigates ).

Terumbu Siput is claimed by the People's Republic of China as part of the city of Sansha in its Hainan Province .
